The Skills Ladder Is Not a Ladder
Career growth in tech is not linear. A senior engineer is not just someone who has written more code; they are someone who multiplies the output of the people around them.
Seniority is about judgment, not tenure. The judgment to know when to slow down, when to push back, and when a simple solution is the right one.
Visibility and Reputation
Doing great work in private is not enough. Write about what you build, speak at meetups, contribute to open source. Reputation compounds like interest.
Your manager's manager does not see your code. They see the artifacts your work produces: launches, docs, RFCs, incident retrospectives. Write those things.
Knowing When to Move On
If you have not grown in a year, the company is growing without you or you are growing without the company. Either way, a conversation is overdue.
Specialization vs Breadth
T-shaped skills — deep in one area, working knowledge across many — is the classic advice. In practice, the shape shifts with the market. Stay curious and deliberately uncomfortable.
